Australian Bulldog Registration Requirements

DVL2 Screw Tail Gene Variant and Adamts3 Gene Variant [ Airways Oedema]

As yet, few MDBA-registered Australian Bulldogs in our gene pool have been tested for these gene variants to be able to establish a GAP for this breed. Early results indicate that the prevalence of dogs in this breed with one or no copies of these genes will allow for a good chance of success in eliminating these health risks in this breed. For us to move forward with potential strategies for better health for the breed and for our members to be proactive, we need to see the frequency. It is necessary for MDBA breeders in this breed to test their breeding dogs.

  1. All Australian Bulldogs must complete a pre-breeding health check before breeding using the MDBA pre-breeding health check form. The results must be sent to the MDBA.
  2. Any new adult Australian Bulldog breeding dog entering the MDBA registry after 1.12.22 must be tested for these two genes. Result documentation will be required before acceptance.
  3. Any Australian Bulldog on MDBA-restricted papers requiring an upgrade to mains papers from 1.12.22 must be tested for these two genes. Result documentation will be required prior to acceptance.
  4. Any MDBA breeder member who wishes to register an Australian Bulldog pup on For Breeding papers as part of their litter from 1.3.23 must have either both parents tested or known by parentage or the pup tested for these two genes. Result documentation will be required before acceptance.

No dogs will be removed from the gene pool or deemed unsuitable for breeding by the MDBA REGARDLESS OF THE RESULTS OF THEIR TESTS. The primary objective at this time is to enable educated breeding decisions, locate any dogs with one or no copies, and demonstrate the progress in this breed as we work toward having dogs with less risk of disease. It is not to take the ability to make decisions away from the breeder or to lower the gene pool diversity in any way. We highly recommend these two tests be done sooner rather than later and that results be sent to info@mdba.net.au. Health and DNA  results will not be listed on the pedigrees, and breeders are encouraged to send both the bad and the good results to the MDBA, even for dogs eliminated from breeding, to enable us to ascertain the frequency of problems and disease incidences in the breed.
